Congratulations to Professor Trevor Coward: Awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Academy of Healthcare Science

Dear Members,

I have the pleasure of informing you that Professor Trevor Coward was today awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS), the single overarching body for the entire UK Healthcare Science (HCS) workforce. The AHCS works with the professional bodies, government and regulators, and is also the professional standards accredited (PSA) regulator of our Consultant Clinical Scientists in Reconstructive Science (Higher Specialist Scientist, HSS Register).

This prestigious award recognises Trevors' outstanding contribution to healthcare science and the advancement of patient care. Reconstructive Science (RS) emerged as a new healthcare science discipline from Maxillofacial Prosthetics (MfP) in 2013. Trevor was a lead writer of the Scientist Training Program (STP) in Reconstructive Science (2010-12); he developed the first MSc in Craniofacial Technology at Kings College London (2008); he was a lead Editor on the Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST) in Reconstructive Science (2016).

Trevor has had a distinguished clinical (Consultant-Guys & St Thomas NHS Trust) and academic career (KCL). His early work in the 1990’s on external 3D scanning of ears and his interest in colour science and colour reproduction technology, pioneered the use of these technologies in our discipline today. He is well known to all in the profession and is still our leading academic in the UK. His latest joint grant of £6.7million with KCL, and the Universities of Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester and Manchester Met is pioneering 3D printing of silicone facial prosthetics (AM FACES). He is the most published researcher in the profession and has always had a clinical career alongside his academic commitments.

Trevor has been part of the professional body (IMPT) for many years, in numerous roles, most notably Education Officer. His selfless work was recognised by his peers with an IMPT Fellowship in 2012. Training, sharing his knowledge has always been a passion of his. Trevor will have been part of most current working UK MfP/RS's training and career,  this passion has been transferred across the globe with trainees from all corners including the US, Australia, Hong Kong, and India.

Trevor always acknowledges the part his team members play, a shared success. He has supported their development and relied on many IMPT members, other professional groups, NHS, clinical and academic  team members throughout his work and academic life to make this exceptional lifelong career possible.

This award is also fantastic news for our profession, for one of our senior IMPT members to be promoted to the highest level of award from the AHCS and the ‘visability’ this award affords us within the Healthcare Science community. You only have to look at the distinguished previous nominees, including our current Chief Scientific Officer, Dame Professor Sue Hill, to understand the gravity of this award.

Congratulations. A humble, thoughtful, quiet, considered individual who has worked tirelessly for his patients and his peers. Much deserved.
